What is Ecomix?

Ecomix is a computer-controlled fuel management system that needs no major changes to your engine and delivers substantial cost savings, reduced driver fatigue and a cleaner environment. The Ecomix BFS (Binary Fuel System) allows small quantities of LPG and diesel to enter the engine simultaneously, based on the fumigation method, using an Electronic Control Unit.

Diesel engines do not achieve complete thermal efficiency during the combustion cycle, burning only approximately 70-80% of the fuel injected into the combustion chamber. Modern diesel engines, although more efficient, still have high emissions and do not achieve a 100% combustion rate.

95-97% combustion rate

The introduction of a very small amount of LPG – 7-15% by volume – dramatically increases the thermal efficiency of the engine, resulting in a 95-97% combustion rate, with typical overall fuel savings of some 20%.

With the Ecomix BFS, LPG vapour is delivered to the engine using the fumigation method. Electronic injectors are placed on the low-pressure side of the turbo charger or directly into the inlet manifold and connected via a vapour line to a positive pressure phase converter. When the oxygen/LPG enters the cylinder it becomes a catalyst for the unburnt diesel fuel.

Engine damage prevention

Recent tests have shown the introduction of precisely monitored amounts of LPG into a diesel engine does not increase combustion temperatures, so there is no risk of damage to an engine. In fact decreases of 2% have been measured.

Engine damage prevention is based around the seamless return to diesel-only operation as soon as the ECU registers a fault in engine operation. Gas supply cannot be initiated without a signal from the ECU – the flow valve requires power to stay open.

Four key initiation triggers must register with the ECU before LPG is delivered to the engine. Any fault in these results in the engine running on diesel only.
